Maine’s Names

Maine is a big state with 33,215 square miles. It is approximately 380 miles long and 200 miles wide. It also has some funny named towns. Here are some that I found in my visit there.

I didn’t expect to find an Alligator Lake in Maine. Isn’t it too cold for alligators there? I was relieved to find that the town is named for the shape of the lake.

Bubbles started out as “boobies” for the shape of the two hills in the town. Mapmakers changed the name to Bubbles to be more proper.

See if you can say Cobbosseecontee real fast, five times. If you can, how about Mooselookmeguntic? Or, Passagassawakeag?

And, then there are these names for Maine towns: Christmas Cove, Harbor, Pocomoonshine, Porcupine, Purgatory, Robinhood, Two Bush and Yankeetuladi. Does time spent living in Purgatory, ME count toward getting into heaven?
